Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “ıvır zıvır sindirilebilirler”) tanımlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine bandajlanmasıyla oluşan endamsız polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit lafıntısı ile ötekisi arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok nüshada polipeptit madun birimi barındırır). Taban ayrım peptitlerin endamsız, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi esnasında her amino asit, vesair amino asite kadimî, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle bandajlanır. Polipeptid kuruluşsına sulplan amino asitlerin her biri kuruluşya peptid bandajlarıyla bandajlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir su çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Vasati bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilinen en uzun polipeptit, yaklaşık 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda mevcut “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine sulplan amino asitlere lafıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki lafıntı, bağ yapmamış, muaf amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin vesair ucundaki muaf α-karboksil grubu olan lafıntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
